On 14 November, Russia launched a series of overnight air attacks on Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine. What happened? Just after midnight, air raid sirens sounded in Kyiv and residents headed to the nearest underground shelters. Not long afterwards, drones (remotecontrolled flying machines) were heard in the sky, along with gunfire from Ukraine’s air defences. Ukraine’s president Volodymyr Zelensky said Russia had launched 430 drones and 18 missiles against Ukraine and that dozens of high-rise buildings had been damaged. In Kyiv, at least six people were killed, and two people died in a drone attack on a market in Chornomorsk, a city in the south of the country. At least 34 people were injured. The Homes for Ukraine scheme was launched in March 2022, after the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Under the scheme, people in the UK could sponsor someone wanting to flee Ukraine and provide somewhere for them to stay for at least six months. The governments in Wales and Scotland also provided sponsorships for Ukrainians. Almost 270,000 Ukrainian refugees were allowed to stay in the UK under the scheme. At first they were allowed to stay for three years but this February that period was extended for another 18 months.…

To celebrate 30 years since her book Coming toEngland came out, author and former children’s TV presenter Floella Benjamin visited a school in London to talk about it. Benjamin is part of the Windrush generation (a group of people who came from the Caribbean to live and work in the UK). The book tells of her experience of coming to the UK from Trinidad, aged 10, and dealing with racism (when people are treated unfairly because of their skin colour or culture). Many countries are moving towards making “clean” energy (see panel), such as solar and wind power. Solar power is energy generated from sunlight. In fact, so much solar power is being produced in Australia that some people will now be given free electricity. Australia is very sunny and in recent years it has been installing lots of solar power systems. These are panels that look like slabs of glass but inside are solar cells, which contain layers of a substance called silicon. When sunlight hits the silicon, an electric charge builds up. This creates a flow of electricity. Australia now has more than four million solar systems on rooftops, and they can provide more electricity than the country’s coal-fired power stations. Giraffes are known for their impressive height, which allows them to reach leaves on the tops of acacia trees in Africa. Their long necks are obviously a big help with this, but researchers recently found that giraffes’ long legs are just as, if not more, helpful. It is to do with blood pressure, which is the amount of force the body uses to pump blood. Giraffes have high blood pressure because their hearts need to work very hard to pump blood all the way up through their long necks to their brains. In fact, just the heart of a resting giraffe uses more energy than the entire body of a resting human. On 11 November, the Government set out plans to stop the testing of products on animals. At the moment, some medicines and chemicals, such as those used on food crops, are tested on animals to make sure they won’t harm people, wildlife or the environment. The Government’s plan has a number of steps to stop animal testing. By the end of next year, researchers will no longer be allowed to use animals to check whether products cause skin and eye irritation. By 2030, testing products on dogs and non-human primates, such as monkeys, will be cut by more than a third. There are strict rules around animal testing, and the practice has been decreasing over the last 10 years. However, there are still tests every year in the UK. Most…

The Sheffield Hatters have enjoyed a winning start to the Women’s Super League Basketball (SLB) season. The Hatters are one of the 10 teams playing in the competition, which started last month. The SLB is the highest level of club basketball in the UK. Caledonia Gladiators, Cardiff Met Archers, Essex Rebels, Leicester Riders, London Lions, Manchester Basketball, Newcastle Eagles, Nottingham Wildcats and Oaklands Wolves are the other teams. They all play each other twice and the winning team in each match gets two points. The team with most points after all the season’s games have been played wins the SLB Championship. This year marked the 250th anniversary of the birth of J.M.W. Turner, one of the UK’s most famous painters. Next year it will be 250 years since the birth of John Constable, another of the country’s most celebrated artists. Both men were well known for landscape painting, a type of art that focuses on the outdoors and nature. To mark the anniversaries, the Tate Britain art gallery in London is hosting a special exhibition featuring work by both men. Turner & Constable: Rivals & Originals explores their work and lasting impact. It features paintings, sketches and items that the two artists owned, including paint boxes. Roblox isn’t just about playing games, it’s about making them too. The Roblox website has lots of guides on doing that with the Roblox Studio app, but here are some extra tips from top creators. The first tip is to dive in. “Find something to make with your friends and just bash it together. 21 November 2015 The Week Junior publishes its first issue It’s a special week for The Week Junior – our very first issue came out 10 years ago. It was published in the aftermath of a series of terrorist attacks on 13 November 2015 in Paris, France. We chose the Peace for Paris symbol for our cover. It merges the international peace symbol with Paris’s famous Eiffel Tower, to show how the people of Paris stood together. The Week Junior has changed over the years; we didn’t have a Wellbeing page at first and we have doubled the number of puzzles. Visiting an art gallery can be an eye-opening and richly rewarding experience that introduces people to new works of art and new ways of looking at the world. You might have a favourite painting or sculpture, or enjoy making your own art. Recently, scientists discovered that not only is art enjoyable, it’s also good for your health. In the study, 25 people viewed original artwork at the Courtauld Gallery in London, while the other 25 looked at copies of the same paintings, but not at a gallery. The results showed that the people who saw the paintings in the art gallery had lower stress levels and their immune system was boosted, among other benefits. What do you enjoy more, drawing or story building? Most of the time, they go hand in hand. Story building is fascinating but I especially love when these stories come alive through my drawings. When I was 10 years old I loved drawing, reading and dancing. I wanted to become a ballerina, and failing that, a fashion designer. The US space company Blue Origin successfully launched a rocket on 13 November, carrying two spacecraft that will fly to Mars. The craft, which don’t have astronauts on board, are part of a mission called Escapade, run by NASA (the US space agency) to study Mars and prepare for future human exploration. The rocket, New Glenn, was launched from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida, US. The booster – part of the rocket’s engine that helps to launch it – separated from the rocket once it was in the air and landed safely back on Earth without being damaged. On 17 November, the UK Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood announced the Government’s plans to change the UK’s asylum seeker laws. An asylum seeker is a person who has asked another country for protection after fleeing their own because of war or the threat of violence. When a country agrees to offer an asylum seeker protection, that person becomes recognised as a refugee. What did the Home Secretary announce? The Government wants to reduce the number of people trying to seek asylum in the UK, and to remove from the country people who have asked for asylum but been turned down. Vicky is a 17-year-old from Bristol, England, who has worked on the Diana Award anti-bullying programme. The Diana Award is a charity that helps young people who are working to improve the lives of others. Last week was Anti-Bullying Week, organised by the Diana Award with Kooth, a wellbeing app for children. The Week Juniorspoke to Vicky to find out more. November is a great month to spot grey seals. As the temperature drops and the seas get more choppy, they haul themselves up onto the shore to have their fluffy white pups. About 40% of all the world’s grey seals are found around Britain. They only come ashore in certain places – usually quite remote. These include the Monach and Orkney Islands in Scotland, the Farne Islands and Norfolk coast in England, and the Pembrokeshire and Ceredigion coasts in Wales. Grey seals are the larger of the UK’s two seal species (the other is the harbour seal). Their scientific name is Halichoerus grypus, meaning hook-nosed sea pig. Elderly African penguins At the New England Aquarium in Boston, US, seven elderly African penguins have been given their own special enclosure. Eric Fox, who works there, describes it as an “old folks’ home”. The island is set apart from younger birds so older ones don’t have to compete for territory.
