A Venezuelan politician, María Corina Machado, has won this year’s Nobel Peace Prize.
The Nobel awards were created by Swedish inventor and businessman Alfred Nobel in 1901. The prizes are split into six categories: chemistry, economics, literature, peace, physics and physiology or medicine. They are given to people or organisations for outstanding achievements in these different areas.
Machado was recognised for her work promoting democratic rights for the people of Venezuela. Democratic rights include everyone getting a say in how the country is run, the right to protest, speak freely and to be treated equally. She is the leader of the opposition party – that is the main political party that isn’t in power.
