On 18 February, the MOBO Awards took place in Newcastle, England, to celebrate excellence in black music and culture. MOBO stands for Music of Black Origin.
This year, Ayra Starr became the first woman to win best African music act at the MOBOs in 16 years, and the first African woman to win best international act. Starr is from Nigeria. After accepting the first of her awards, the singer told the crowd, “I’m actually shaking right now, I’m very nervous. Thank you so much to everybody that supported me.”
The rapper Central Cee also made history, becoming the first artist to be named best male act three times. He’s now won seven MOBOs, making him the joint most successful rapper in the awards’ history, alongside Stormzy.
