On 17 March, it was announced that Vladimir Putin had been elected president of Russia for the fifth time. However, people around the world, including high-ranking politicians, said the election was unfair.
What happened?
According to election officials, Putin won around 88% of votes, and 74% of people who are old enough to vote took part. Putin has been Russia’s president since 2012, although he also held the role between 1999 and 2008. On 17 March, thousands of people gathered in Red Square, Moscow, to celebrate Putin’s victory and listen to him give a speech.
