A PAINTING SAVED FROM THE BIN A painting found in a French woman’s kitchen in 2019 will be displayed at the Louvre art museum in Paris, France. Painted around 750 years ago by the artist Cimabue, it shows Jesus on a gold leaf background. The art was nearly thrown away but sold for £21 million. A NEW CHILDREN IN NEED PRESENTER On 17 November, charity fundraising TV show Children in Need had its first child presenter. Lenny Rush is a 14-year-old award-winning actor who stars in children’s TV Show The Dumping Ground. Lenny said he was excited to help “a great cause”. When wheelchair basketball player Charlie Adams first saw the email telling him he’d got into Great Britain’s under 22s team, he didn’t know what to say. “I was absolutely speechless,” he tells The Week Junior. “The words didn’t process in my mind.” Adams is only 19 and, given his age, he felt very surprised about his success. It took him a couple of days to get used to the idea before he even told his family and friends. Adams was born with scoliosis, which causes his spine to be curved, and arthrogryposis, which means he cannot rotate his ankles and only has a small amount of rotation in his wrists. Imagination is a wonderful thing. Humans use it to come up with everything from clever inventions to entertaining stories. A group of scientists have been looking into whether animals can harness the power of imagination too. The team concluded that rats can and they use it to navigate around spaces. “Human imagination is being able to think about something without doing that action,” said Chongxi Lai, one of the lead scientists on the project. The team set up a study to see if rats have this ability as well, focusing on an area of their brains called the hippocampus. Fifty years ago, the late Queen Elizabeth II opened the Sydney Opera House. The huge white building is one of Australia’s most famous landmarks and is home to a spectacular fireworks display every New Year’s Eve, which is watched around the world. On 26 November, millions of people will be settling down to watch the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2023. Acts from 16 European countries will each sing a song and compete to win the votes of the public and an expert panel of judges. It is being held in the French city of Nice because France’s entry, a 13-year-old singer called Lissandro, won the competition in 2022. Although the competitors are younger – aged between nine and 14 – the event follows a similar format to the main Eurovision Song Contest, which is held earlier in the year. On 30 November it’s St Andrew’s Day, a time to celebrate all things Scottish – and highland cows are a popular symbol of Scotland. These shaggy-haired cattle have big horns but they are known for being friendly and gentle. The Children’s Parliament works to bring children together to talk about important issues. On 29 November, it will host the World Children’s Parliament event for people aged seven to 11. The online event will see 300 young people from all over the world take part in a discussion about protecting the planet. It will also feature a live conversation with people taking part in the Darwin200 project. Kowaris belong to a group of animals called marsupials, which carry their babies in pouches and include kangaroos. On a cold winter’s evening, when it’s dark and chilly outside, there’s nothing more enticing than sitting by the fire with a mug of hot chocolate and wearing fluffy socks. However, environmental campaigners say that there should be stricter rules when it comes to log fires. In November, the UK’s duck population increases as many migrate (move) from places with colder winters. The widgeon comes from countries including Iceland, Russia and Sweden. They can grow to 48 centimetres long and have a round head and short bill (beak). Male widgeons are grey with a pinkish breast, a red-brown head, yellow forehead and white patches on their wings. Females have rusty brown feathers. Widgeons gather in large groups on wet or flooded grasslands and lakes with sloped banks so they can get out easily. Artificial intelligence (AI) could be used to predict the weather more quickly and accurately than traditional methods, scientists have said. AI involves a computer being able to learn from experience and perform tasks that usually require human intelligence. The traditional way to forecast the weather is using numerical weather prediction (NWP). This uses measurements – sometimes hundreds of millions in a day – of what is happening in the Earth’s atmosphere. The measurements come from places including weather satellites (objects sent into space to observe weather on Earth), special weather balloons and sensors on aeroplanes. An expensive scent for babies Fashion company Dior has created a perfume for babies that costs £230 a bottle. The Bonne Étoile “scented water” apparently contains whiffs of pear and wild rose. Francis Kurkdjian, the creative director for perfumes at Dior, said he wanted to create a product “for little ones that is as simple as they are”.
