On 24 September, a sample of space dust was successfully landed on Earth. It had been brought back from an asteroid (space rock) called Bennu as part of a mission run by the US space agency NASA. What is the aim of the mission? NASA launched the Osiris-Rex mission to collect samples of rock and dust from Bennu, an asteroid whizzing through space. Using these samples, scientists hope to find out more about how our solar system first formed 4.5 billion years ago, and how life began. A 14-year-old girl from north London has set herself a unique task. Mimi can solve a Rubik’s Cube in 26 seconds, and she is now creating flags with her solved cubes. Every day, Mimi creates a new flag out of multiple cubes. She started with Afghanistan in January and she aims to make most of the flags in the world by the end of the year, finishing with Zimbabwe. However, because there are only six colours on a Rubik’s Cube, and no black, she cannot complete all the flags. Estonia, for example, is blue, black and white. Natterjack toad The organisation Natural England has awarded £14.5 million in funding to charities that look after endangered species, including this one. A company run by Google, called DeepMind, has found a way to predict diseases in people using artificial intelligence (AI). This is the name given to a computer system that can “think” for itself and perform tasks that usually require human intelligence, such as problem-solving and decision-making. Google DeepMind is an AI company that works with scientists, engineers and researchers to solve difficult challenges using technology. They say their aim is to advance science and benefit humanity, and their research includes finding ways to use technology to identify and treat diseases. DeepMind’s new software, AlphaMissense, works by looking at DNA. This is a chemical found in all animals and plants that carries information about every living thing’s appearance and characteristics. With the new Women’s Super League (WSL) season starting on 1 October, Everton goalkeeper Emily Ramsey has high targets. “It’s going to be so competitive this year but I’m really looking forward to it and I’m always aiming to improve,” she tells The Week Junior. The WSL is the highest level of women’s club football in England and there are 12 teams taking part. They play each other twice between October and May, and the team with the most points after all the matches have taken place wins the league. A new trailer has hatched for Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget, the sequel to Chicken Run. The original film was released in 2000 by Aardman, the creators of Wallace & Gromit. The story followed Ginger and Rocky, two chickens determined to get themselves and their feathered friends away from their farm and the evil Mrs Tweedy, who wants to turn them into pies. In the sequel, the chickens have found a peaceful island sanctuary. However, when they hear about a threat to all of chicken-kind on the mainland, Ginger and her team must break into a chicken farm and face their old enemy. Roger McGough is one of the UK’s most famous poets. He has published over 100 books of poetry for adults and children but he can’t say which is his favourite, he tells The Week Junior, because “the others will get jealous”. McGough’s advice to poets is “don’t write a poem about something”. The Bowes Museum in County Durham has been awarded £146,342 to help restore its famous mechanical silver swan. The life-sized bird will be 250 years old this year. It contains 2,000 mechanical parts that enable it to preen its feathers and extend its long and elegant neck to scoop up fish. The common wasp is not very popular, despite the fact it kills pests like flies and pollinates our gardens. However, you might have more sympathy for them if you knew their situation at this time of year. Common wasps have a stripy black and yellow body, a thin “waist” between their thorax and abdomen and a black mark on their face that looks like a ship’s anchor. An adults’ job is to feed wasp larvae (young) with insects. In return, the larvae produce a sugary treat. National Poetry Day is a nationwide celebration of poetry held on the first Thursday of every October. Poetry uses words and rhythm to tell stories and spark the imagination of the reader. To celebrate, thousands of events will take place in schools, arts centres, cafés and libraries. Around the north of England, young people are taking part in a project called History in the Making, which tells the stories of their local areas. Historic England, an organisation that looks after historic places, is funding 11 of the youth-led projects. These include everything from giant wall paintings to walking trails and theatre productions. The first ever FIFA game came out 30 years ago, in 1993. It quickly became the most popular series of football video games. Now there’s a big change, because the game’s publisher, Electronic Arts (EA), and the football organisation FIFA have ended their partnership. EA is continuing the games with a new name, and EA Sports FC 24 is out this month. It includes all the game modes from the last game, FIFA 23, but there are new features too. “Dogtember” at Saltdean Lido in Brighton is a special time for water-loving dogs. It is an annual event in September that aims to raise money for the lido (outdoor pool) to keep it in good condition. At the opening event, 150 golden retrievers jumped in, but dogs of all shapes and sizes are welcome at the sessions. By the end of the month, organisers think around 8,000 dogs of all breeds, with their humans, will have taken part. Whether you love them or hate them, there’s no denying that spiders are fascinating creatures. In fact, they are one of the earliest land-living animals, having evolved around 345 million years ago. The world’s spiders chomp through up to 800 million tonnes of prey, such as insects, every year. Arachnophobia is one of the most common types of phobia (extreme fear), and many more people simply find spiders gross or a little bit scary. Hollie Standall-Would is a forester for Forestry England. Her job protecting and managing forests is much like that of a carrot farmer, she tells The Week Junior. Trees are planted, like carrots, straight in the ground and really close together. “As time goes on,” she says, “we thin them out, chop down the tree and turn it into timber for everything from railway tracks to furniture.” As well as planting trees to be chopped down, Hollie’s job is to protect the oldest trees, which foresters call “veteran trees”. Male palm cockatoos, also known as goliath cockatoos or great black cockatoos, have a special way of attracting a mate – they play the drums for them. The males even make their own drumsticks, and tap trees in a rhythmic way, with each individual using a unique pattern. Scientists have known about the cockatoo’s musical methods for a while but they recently discovered something new – each male cockatoo crafts their drumstick in their own unique style. They don’t copy each other but fathers teach their stick-crafting skills to their male offspring. A team of experts at Australia National University, led by Professor Robert Heinsohn, found that some birds pick sticks that are short and fat, while others prefer long and skinny ones.
