DISTRIBUTION: widespread across the northern hemisphere as far north as the Arctic Circle, also introduced in Australia. Not found in Iceland, Greenland, the Arctic islands, and some parts of Siberia.

FOOD: Fully omnivorous. Actively hunts small animals up to 3.5kg in weight and will also take the young of larger animals such as deer. Otherwise they will predate eggs of ground-nesting birds and eat anything from insects, worms and carrion to plant material, especially fruit. In urban areas human refuse is readily scavenged.
