I’m very lucky to be given a selection of game on a regular basis, so there’s always a frozen rabbit or a couple of pigeon breasts in reserve. Sometimes I am given a pheasant or a brace of partridge, and there’s a farmers’ market in town once a fortnight, where I can buy venison.
Sadly, squirrel is not on the farmers’ menu. “There’s no demand for it,” I was told, last time I asked, and the customers behind me in the queue took collective sharp intake of breath and a step back. Apparently, it’s fashionable to eat venison, duck, pigeon and pheasant, but squirrel or even rabbit, not so much. What a load of nonsense.
