Transport for Wales expects to have trains running to Treherbert from February 29 following the line’s upgrade, with driver training continuing as this issue of RAIL went to press.
The service will be two trains per hour to and from Cardiff Central using Class 150 diesel units, with TfW promising to introduce its new Stadler Class 756 stock from this summer.
Next winter, TfW says Class 398 tram-trains should start on the line, using the new overhead line equipment to operate electrically.
During the upgrade, TfW has replaced the branch line’s token signalling system, built new platforms at Treherbert, Ynyswen and Dinas Rhondda, added passing loops between Ynsywen and Treherbert, Ton Pentre and Ystrad Rhondda, and between Porth and Dinas Rhondda, and erected overhead line equipment.
