Originally from South America, the charismatic tegu made its way to the United States via the pet trade in the last century. After wreaking havoc in Florida’s ecosystems, the exotic lizard became classified as an invasive species. But a recent discovery from the Florida Museum of Natural History reveals the reptiles are no strangers there — tegus were resident in the region millions of years before their modern relatives arrived. News & Views Mezcal is a distilled alcohol made from the boiled and fermented sap of agave plants. Most mezcal beverages — including all brands of tequila — are sold as pure distillates, but some have an added stowaway bottled inside: popularly but inaccurately referred to as a worm. Known locally in Mexico as gusanos de maguey (which is Spanish for “agave worms”), these odd organic chasers are actually a type of insect larva, with their addition to mezcal being a relatively recent one, given the long history of this type of drink. Scientists at the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (STRI) found that the fringe-lipped bat (Trachops cirrhosus), known to eavesdrop on frog and toad mating calls to find its prey, learns to distinguish between palatable and unpalatable frogs and toads through experience. This new discovery provides the first evidence that eavesdropping predators fine-tune their hunting cues over the course of their development. Fringe-lipped bats, which range from Panama to Brazil, are amongst the most skilled eavesdroppers in the world: they are attuned to the sexual advertisement calls of over a dozen frog and toad species that live in their habitat. Tortoises have been popular as pets in the UK for decades, and tortoise keeping has advanced rapidly over the last twenty years. Now, several relatively hardy species of tortoises are being bred regularly and reliably, including Horsfield’s (Agrionemys horsfieldi), Hermann’s (Testudo hermanni) and the Mediterranean spur-thighed (Testudo graeca), along with a growing number of marginated tortoises (Testudo marginata), which is Europe’s largest species. These tortoises will all eat and thrive on similar foods, requiring a herbivorous diet.
