Eighteen years ago, I worked for a company that provided me with a car and a laptop. The car was renewed every three months and it always had some teething issues. The laptop ran on Windows XP, was always reliable and never changed. These days, I drive an 18-year-old car that never breaks down, but the same can’t be said for my laptop. One of the common principles of blockchain services is that they return revenue to the user, often in exchange for their data. Storj.io, however, lets you make money by storing other people’s files. Storj.io is the blockchain equivalent of Dropbox. But its USP is that it allows you to rent out spare space on your disk drives in exchange for Storj, a cryptocurrency similar to Ethereum. Storj “farmers” – people with disk space to spare – can set their own rates for storage rental, in much the same way you decide how much to charge for your spare room on Airbnb. PRICE £200 ON SALE November 2017 When you price a smart speaker at £200, you must be confident yours is something special. And Sony surely is. Its obvious differentiator is a LED screen lurking beneath the mesh exterior, which you can use to display the time, view alarms or check the volume counter (the screen can be switched off too). But what actually sets Sony’s speaker apart from the crowd is gesture controls. For instance, by tracing a circle in the air over the top of the speaker with your finger you’ll adjust the volume. That’s “big” purely in the figurative sense, mind you: physically it’s exactly the same size, and the casing has the same unfortunate plasticky feel. There are a decent few differences to discover, however. Ergonomically, the major change is a move of the volume rocker to the front of the chassis; it now falls under your left thumb when you hold the tablet in landscape mode. On the opposite side, Acer’s “MediaMaster” button cycles you through three preset video and audio profiles, designed for apps, music and movies respectively. And like the Tab S3, it does so by closely copying Apple’s design. Thus we get another 9.7in screen, with – once again – a 2,048 x 1,536 resolution that makes for a Retinaperfect 264ppi. It’s not quite as vivid as the iPad’s panel, hitting a peak brightness of 426cd/m2, but it’s perfectly satisfactory for indoor use. It’s not often researchers scare themselves, but Michal Kosinski and Yilun Wang created a neural network that “disturbed” them so much they nearly didn’t release it. Many think they shouldn’t have. The researchers from Stanford University trained a neural network to analyse two photos, guessing which one was the face of a gay or straight person. The paper (pcpro.link/278gay)in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology claims the neural network was accurate significantly more often than humans. The neural network saw accuracy of 91% for men and 83% for women, well above the 61% and 54% accuracy rates of human judges. It isn’t quite as pocket-friendly as it could be, though, thanks to a chunky bezel that bulks up the dimensions. The screen is a letdown, too. Its maximum brightness of 330cd/m² and 959:1 contrast ratio might sound all right, but colours are decidedly on the drab side, and in adverse lighting it’s quite reflective, making the Fire 7 harder to read than other tablets with ostensibly similar screens. The news that malware sneaked into CCleaner’s installer certainly isn’t what you want to read over your breakfast (see p10). Even worse, it was digitally signed using the publisher’s own digital certificate, so any right-thinking user who follows the obvious recommendation of “never install anything that isn’t digitally signed” got screwed too. Some vendors ship code that isn’t digitally signed. In the past, you could almost excuse this because the process was laborious, and just a hassle for the software author.
