In the spring of 1966, photographer Larry Fink, working on assignment for New York literary mag East Side Review, followed Andy Warhol and his East Village entourage (including Edie Sedgwick, Ingrid Superstar, and Lou Reed), capturing the cultural climate at the peak of Warhol’s Factory era. Fink shot the tribe over the course of five days, and though East Side Review folded before the images could be published, they’ve been resurrected in Fink on Warhol, a transgressive, nostalgic monograph available this month from Damiani. Fink, who’s best known for his 1984 photobook, Social Graces, says the images collected dust because he, too, was swept up in the movement. “I was high all the time back then,” he says, “and I wasn’t a careerist. IN 1997, THE FIRST WAVE OF antiretroviral drugs was just beginning to have an impact, as the number of those dying of AIDS-related illnesses began to drop. That same year, a six-story building of 36 studio apartments for HIV-positive men and women was officially opened in New York’s lower east side. “It’s taken seven years of battle waged against every level of government to see this project through,” Keith Cylar told The New York Times at the time. A dogged activist and co-founder of Housing Works, Cylar had decided that the standard-issue cot and locker for housing the homeless wasn’t good enough. When Icons Play Icons There’s a special thrill in profiling Hollywood legends whose careers have spanned decades, but when one of them plays another icon, as was the case with our April cover star Jessica Lange, the rewards are doubly rich. Lange plays Joan Crawford in Ryan Murphy’s FX series Feud: Betty & Joan, and it wasn’t much of a stretch to have the Oscar winner channel Crawford’s old Hollywood glamour in Ruven Afanador’s photography.
