The island, which was designed specifically to suit the space, is one of this kitchen’s standout features. The island’s skirting was designed to travel through the space, starting at the side panel and finishing at the cabinet against the wall. The panels share the same route as the rest of the area, creating a sense of cohesion in the kitchen. Overlooking a vast hilly landscape dotted with eucalypt trees and roaming kangaroos, the home on Melbourne’s fringe needed a kitchen packed with a mixture of natural materials that would create a timeless space in harmony with its exterior context. Simple minimalist shapes form a streamlined kitchen full of drama and interest. A linear architectural layout ensures functionality for the young family that cooks within its parameters, and safeguards against mid-kitchen collisions. The design is pared back and forgoes unnecessary detail, instead focusing on the basics and making them magnificent. White reigned supreme in this home’s previous kitchen, which was a typical late-‘90s-style space with white cabinets and benchtops, stainless-steel handles and matching glass splashbacks. The homeowners wanted a revived kitchen that would unexpectedly impact and surprise visitors, so this black-and-timber masterpiece was created. The pink tile splashback was chosen early on in the design process when we noticed a foot stool with a similar pink that would work perfectly as a tiled herringbone splashback. Cohesion of these striking elements was important in this kitchen, ensuring a seamless flow between the timber-look cabinetry, marble benchtops, matt black panels and pink splashback. This new kitchen, while beautiful, is also incredibly special. It is part of a new passive house build — a home that is incredibly energy efficient with a reduced ecological footprint. The homeowners had a very specific idea for how the home’s kitchen needed to look and function and were very happy with the end result. This delightful kitc hen is an outstanding example of how traditional and modern design can be combined to create a gorgeous space. The homeowners were set on an “old meets new” kitchen with plentiful storage, and Rochet Kitchens did not disappoint. This thoughtfully designed open-plan area features beautiful, classic-look black Shaker-style doors, which are juxtaposed with modern black kickboards. A concrete-look benchtop featuring a breakfast bar was integrated to add further contrast while ensuring the homeowners have plenty of room for food preparation and casual dining. Now refined and functional, this Better Bathrooms & Kitchens-designed space was once a quintessential l990s country-style kitchen. From the archways and moulded mint doors to the laminate benchtops and angled corners, it was a Spice Girl short of full-blown ‘90s nostalgia. The original arch was farewelled and removed. The kitchen was then extended into the large adjoining meals area for a more open-plan aesthetic. Responsible for creating less useable space, the angled corners were removed to make way for a more streamlined design. Key to the brief was opening up the room and supplying adequate storage solutions. The homeowners dreamt of a light and airy space that was modern yet slightly traditional, in keeping with the style of the home. Flair is not something this kitchen is short on. Bathed in blue, the kitchen incorporates warm natural timbers and marble-look benchtops for a calm and relaxing design. This gorgeous space is one part (though undoubtedly the most important part) of a whole-house fit-out. As avid entertainers and enthusiastic cooks, the homeowners longed for a social hub where they could converse and eat around a statement island benchtop. “We mitred up the laminate block and then simply draped the stone over the top of the bench with a large projected overhang on the end,” designer Mark Kay explains. “Some clever metal framework was used to achieve the final product.” Mark decided the wall run should sit asymmetrically to echo the irregular nature of the island.
