ASK THE ARCHITECT: Tim Dorrington of Dorrington Atcheson Architects Tim, what was your overall approach to this extension? We took Jamie’s brief of ‘Opposite’ and ran with it. The addition has a pitched roof that slots beneath the eaves of the original home. They definitely read as two architectural styles and the detailing is different too. We opted for no architraves or skirting boards, just wall planes that blend smoothly to the ceiling and floor. Was it tempting to convince the Hitchcocks to rip out the kitchen and start again? Designer Vanessa Scoffier spent more than a year sourcing décor details from the City of Light’s famed flea markets. MANY HOTELS STYLE THEMSELVES as homes away from home, but there’s a certain thrill to experiencing a totally new environment, entirely different to your day-to-day. Staying in accommodation with an aesthetic quite unlike your own, surrounded by someone’s else’s vision, is undeniably inspiring. “One of my favourite times of day is in the evening, when the sun reaches through my neighbours’ trees to my office.” My home is a super-compact – 65m2 including the garage! – house designed by CoLab Architecture here in Christchurch. I’d seen it in a few magazines before it miraculously turned up for rent just in time for my move south from Auckland; I knew it was the one. My landlord and his design team had some pretty smart space-saving ideas. Let paints in tutti-frutti shades help your kids carve out zones of their own. Under the sea 1. Print and carefully cut out a paper waves template (homestyle.co.nz/waves). 2. Use a roller to paint the entire wall with two or three coats of Resene Point Break. Allow to dry. 3. Decide how high up the wall you’d like the waves to go, draw a straight line across the wall with a pencil, then stick three 48mm-wide strips of painters’ tape one on top of the other along the wall, so the pencil line is fully covered. 4. SITTING WITH A BOOK ABOUT American weaving, Auckland-based artist Amber Wilson basks in the sun pouring through the window of her studio, tucked in behind Karangahape Road. “I find it very quiet here,” she says. “I enjoy the solitude. There’s no roar of traffic, though being so central, I have to be careful not to fill my days with social excursions. It’s important for my practice to spend time experimenting, and time has become increasingly precious. THE TERM ‘CLASSIC VILLA’ IS REAL- estate jargon that many New Zealanders are familiar with. Stately weatherboard structures with pitched roofs, wide hallways and spacious bedrooms – it’s a set of appealing characteristics that make up for what’s often lacking in the kitchen and laundry departments. When Alex and Jeff Fulton first set eyes on their Marlborough villa, they were enamoured with its heritage architectural elements – enough that they could look past the “50 shades of beige” interior towards their vision of a colourful home for their family. With sloping ceilings and clerestory windows, the open-plan addition captures a lightness of being that’s in contrast to the insular spaces of the Victorian era. “I DON’T LIKE VILLAS,” SAYS JAMIE Hitchcock. “They were designed for a different time and place.” Why buy one then?
