What is your morning beauty routine? I’ve been doing this new ritual where the first thing I do in the morning is put a tablespoon of coconut oil in my mouth and swish it around. The practice of alternating short bursts of intense effort with low- to moderate-intensity recovery periods has been—and continues to be— extremely popular in the fitness world. Visiting Cindy Sherman’s New York apartment has a brain-addling effect. In one room, the trappings of domesticity: a washer-dryer, groceries, a pile of packages. In another, the studio in which Sherman creates her unsettling and subversive portraits, which for almost 40 years have recast culture’s perception of women and men, heroes and victims, and the vastness in between. There are wigs everywhere, a rack of costumes, an intimidating computer, and pieces of notepaper on which are scribbled character clues like “coquette” and, most intriguing, “blueberry.” We’re here because Sherman and Bazaar have been plotting. The French couturier André Courrèges, who passed away in January at the age of 92, didn’t just create clothes, he envisioned an entire future. Often comparing his Paris atelier to a laboratory, he defined the look of the 1960s with his mod miniskirts, go-go boots, and kicky little dresses, propelling women into a new galaxy, where they could dance, march, and make big strides. In 1964, his revolutionary “Space Age” collection blew away the fashion world with its bold, geometric shapes and lunar palette of white and silver.
