Researchers at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine have isolated two proteins that trigger the creation of sound-detecting hair cells in the ear. These cells line the ear and translate sound into nerve impulses that go to the brain. “These hair cells are a major player in hearing loss, and knowing more about how they develop will help us figure out ways to replace hair cells that are damaged,” says Dr. Angelika Doetzlhofer, associate professor of neuroscience. Up to 90 percent of genetic hearing loss is due to damaged hair cells, she says.
