AMERICAN women are breastfeeding their babies in increasing numbers, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control. Among tots born in 2004, 73 percent started out breastfeeding. By 2014, that number had risen to 83 percent of newborns. But the agency cautions some women are stopping earlier than recommended. The American Academy of Pediatrics suggests exclusively breastfeeding babies for the first six months of life and then continuing until at least the age of one, while supplementing their diets with solid foods. However, a 2014 CDC survey shows only 55 percent of infants are breastfed beyond six months. “Breast milk [is] uniquely tailored to meet the health needs of a growing baby,” says the CDC’s Dr. Ruth Petersen. “It is the clinical gold standard for infant nutrition.”…

MEDICAL experts have nixed the necessity for annual Pap tests to screen women for cervical cancer and say those older than 30 may choose to be tested for HPV every five years instead. While a Pap test checks for the presence of potentially deadly lesions, a primary high-risk human papillomavirus (hrHPV) test checks for the presence of the bug responsible for causing most cases of cervical cancer — the fourth most common cancer in women worldwide.
