1 Manual Although you can set the aperture, shutter speed and ISO yourself, the camera meter is still active. Watch the indicator change position on the exposure scale as you make adjustments to the settings. 2 Aperture Priority You set the aperture, and the camera sets a shutter speed it thinks will give the ‘correct’ exposure, based on the subject being metered. If necessary, use exposure compensation to override the meter. 3 Shutter Priority In this mode, you set the shutter speed and the camera sets the aperture. Backlighting When a subject is lit from behind, it may end up looking darker than you intended in the picture. Use exposure compensation to correct this or switch to Centre-Weighted metering, as this will bias the exposure towards the subject (if they’re in the middle). Bright skies The contrast between a bright sky and a dark foreground can often be so strong that you will be unable to retain detail in both. The camera meter will either give you a well-exposed sky (and a dark foreground) or a well-exposed foreground (and an overly bright sky). Light source A strong light source in the picture can cause the meter to underexpose the rest of the scene. Memory cards Raw files are typically two or three times the size of a ‘Fine Quality’ JPEG, so you may need to invest in some highercapacity memory cards – 16GB will probably be a practical minimum. Raw software If you’ve got a new camera, you may need to upgrade to the latest version of your software to open its raw files: manufacturers don’t add new camera support to old versions indefinitely. Long-term storage You’ll need somewhere to store those big raw files long-term. 1TB internal hard drives won’t be big enough, and SSDs are smaller still, but plug-in external drives offer affordable extra capacity.…

1 Dynamic range Typically you can expect to recover up to 1EV extra highlight detail from a raw file, but up to 3-4EV from underexposed areas. Keep this in mind when you shoot high-contrast scenes and expose for the highlights. 2 Your histogram will lie! The histogram on the back of the camera is not displaying your raw file, but a JPEG preview that’s been generated by the camera on the fly. It only shows you what a JPEG would look like, not the raw data itself, which will tend to look flatter until you process it. 3 Expose to the right This means increasing the exposure to push the histogram as far to the right as you dare without clipping the highlights. Marcus Hawkins Photographer and writer Marcus is a former editor of Digital Camera New series: the complete guide to modern photography The light meter inside your camera measures the intensity of light coming through the lens, and works out how much is needed to produce a well-exposed photo – all in a split-second when you tap the shutter release button. That’s the theory, at least. In reality there is some room for error when it comes to exposure. The reason for this is that camera meters are calibrated around the amount of light reflected by a mid-tone subject – in other words, one that reflects 18% of the light that illuminates it. Connection is the key element to guarantee a successful portrait, and this photo has that in buckets. Everything is big: big eyes, big smile, even big hair! This photo has so much going for it that I’d almost be afraid to make major changes – but of course, that’s what we’re here for. The most immediate issue is the white balance. It looks like a flash with the white balance set to Tungsten. A quick look at the Temperature setting reveals this to be true: 3,200K rather than 5,000K for Daylight or Flash. You’ve probably noticed that the overall ratings for many of the tripods in this test are exactly the same. Almost all of the models in the group are excellent, although some score a little higher for features, or build and handling, while others might have better performance or be particularly good value for money. Taking everything into account, however, the Benro Go Plus Travel is our favourite. Shooting close-up images shouldn’t be complicated in theory. The problem is that regular lenses have a minimum focus distance, so you can’t get close enough to tiny objects for them to fill the frame. There are some workarounds, such as screw-on close-up filters and extension rings. The best solution in the long run, though, is a dedicated macro lens. The word ‘macro’ has a strict definition: a lens that can reproduce a subject at its actual size on the camera sensor – so if you photograph an insect that’s 10mm long, its image will be 10mm long on your sensor. 1 White balance adjustments When you shoot a JPEG, you have to get your white balance setting right in-camera because it will discard any remaining ‘unnecessary’ colour data. With a raw file, you keep all the colour information. 2 Noise control Camera makers are good at striking an optimum balance between noise and detail at high ISOs with their in-camera JPEG processing – but it’s still possible to get better results if you make manual adjustments in raw processing software. 3 Choice of developer Not all raw processing programs are the same! Each tends to give your raw images and particular ‘look’ and comes with different processing options. DxO PhotoLab, for example, excels at lens corrections and noise control. 4 Lens correction Some cameras offer built-in lens corrections for the camera maker’s own lenses…

Working directly on your raw files means you’re working on image data that comes straight from the camera and hasn’t been processed already. At one time, the adjustments you could make were limited to brightness, colour and contrast. In some programs that’s still the case: the version of Adobe Camera Raw that comes with Photoshop Elements, for example, is very basic. But the best raw processing tools are now so powerful that you might not need a regular image-editing program like Photoshop at all. Midtone scene Many scenes average out to a midtone value. Here, the subject reflects around 18% of the light that falls on them, which means that the camera should produce an exposure that matches the scene. Bright scene In this example, the bright scene will reflect lots of light into the lens. To compensate for this, the camera will reduce the exposure to bring the scene closer to midtone: in other words, grey snow! Dark scene A dark subject or scene will absorb more light, and reflect less back towards the camera. To compensate, the camera will add more light to the exposure, leading to a washed-out result.…

Digital photography is amazing for so many reasons – not least for the amount of control we now have over our images at home to make them look their best. For this challenge, I’ve taken the ‘free reign’ part of the brief to the extreme. It’s certainly not an everyday portrait edit, but it demonstrates the breadth of possibilities open to you in Photoshop. In the original photo, the subject’s highlighted hair, huge lashes and bold eyes seem larger than life – almost like a caricature. There’s a playfulness to the expression and a light-hearted feel to the portrait that I wanted to emphasise with an over-the-top, anime-style treatment. After processing the image in Camera Raw to enhance the tones, I used the Liquify filter to reshape the face and enlarge the eyes, before finishing off by recolouring the backdrop and hair.
