Xinhua GENEVA – The World Health Organization (WHO) said on Tuesday that current Covid-19 vaccines may need to be updated if they are to provide continued protection against emerging variants, including Omicron. WHO's Technical Advisory Group on Covid 19 Vaccine Composition (TAG-CO-VAC), a group of 18 experts, said that although current vaccines provide a high level of protection against severe disease and death caused by Variants Of Concern (VOC), future vaccines that can prevent infection and transmission need to be developed. In the meantime, the composition of current Covid-19 vaccines may need to be updated in order to protect against the evolution of the virus. It has been claimed that this was the eighth person to have been attacked by the dogs in the last year. The man, who suffered bite wounds on both of his legs and arm, was rushed to the nearest clinic and later transported to Robert Mangaliso Sobukwe Hospital in Kimberley for further treatment. Apparently, some of the previous victims decided not to open cases with the Ritchie police after no progress was made with already existing cases. Benida Phillips benida.phillips@inl.co.za A HISTORIC debt of around R100 million owed to Eskom has resulted in Renosterberg Municipality employees barricading roads with burning tyres and other objects to demonstrate their frustration with the municipality’s failure to pay their December salaries. The workers have vowed to bring the municipality to its knees and to halt the supply of basic services if the local authority does not pay them. The Renosterberg mayor said that the failure to pay salaries was brought on by the municipal account being “frozen” by Eskom due to non-payment. The municipality owes Eskom just over R100 million. Chad Williams ana reporter Cape Town – New research at Oregon State University (OSU) has found that hemp compounds, identified via a chemical screening technique invented at the institution, show the ability to prevent the virus that causes Covid-19 from entering human cells. Hemp, known scientifically as Cannabis sativa, is a source of fibre, food and animal feed, and multiple hemp extracts and compounds are added to cosmetics, body lotions, dietary supplements and food. Findings of the study led by Richard van Breemen, a researcher with Oregon State’s Global Hemp Innovation Centre, College of Pharmacy and Linus Pauling Institute, were published recently in the Journal of Natural Products. Motoring Staff IOL Motoring IT’S NO secret that many South Africans are struggling to renew their driver’s licences at the moment, and there is currently a backlog of almost 400,000 licence cards thanks to a defective printing machine. However, the Department of Transport is confident that the current problems will be resolved through a new card system that is set to be introduced. Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula announced this at a briefing on Wednesday, along with plans to introduce online payment for not only driving licence card renewals but also vehicle licenses as well as learner and driving licence tests. “You can also pay an added fee to get your driving licence card delivered at your doorstep,” said a statement from the Road Traffic Management Corporation posted on Twitter by Mbalula.…

Staff Reporter SOUTH Africa could be in line to host the Indian Premier League (IPL), according to reports yesterday, as India has just entered its third wave of the Covid-19 pandemic. The Indian Express reports that The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is considering alternative venues for the massive cricketing showpiece event, as Covid-19 numbers in the country begin to surge again. The IPL is scheduled to be held from April 2 to June 3.
