What’s more magical than fresh eggs, those little oval spells of super nutrients that appear overnight? The suburban Minnesota hens that conjure this magic are members of our backyard flock: the CovHen. The hens are all named after witches. Edalyn is a Midnight Majesty Marans; Luz, a Lavender Orpington; Lilith, a Speckled Sussex; and Willow, an Ameraucana.
My husband, Matthew, and I built our backyard coop from scratch, following a pattern and decorating it with all things witchy. The chicken witches have an apothecary for their herbs and treats, a black cauldron for water, Midsommar wallpaper in the henhouse, spell books and pentacles, a scrying mirror, crystal ball, and chicken-sized tarot cards and brooms.
