Steve Randall outfits the 11-inch blade of his bowie in a mosaic damascus pattern he calls Cardiac Arrest. As BLADE® field Les Robertson notes in his story on some of today’s hottest damascus patterns, “Steve is an ABS master smith whose work never ceases to amaze or disappoint!” The handle is ancient walrus ivory and the guard and ferrule are damascus. “I purchased this Camillus CUDA in the late 1990s. The strange thing is it says ‘CUDA’ on the blade and not Camillus, and ‘Made in USA.’ I carried it for about 20 years when I was in law enforcement, and used it several times to cut seat belts and other items to gain access. All the later CUDA knives I see have a drop-point blade, and I’ve yet to find another with a tanto blade like mine. Editor’s note: In December of last year, knifemaker Toby Hill notified BLADE® of an intriguing find of an old sword about 20 miles south of Pleasanton in southern Texas. Two of Toby’s friends found the sword while arrowhead hunting on a family ranch after a morning deer hunt. Though caked with rust and minus parts of the handle, the sword looked an awful lot like it could have been carried by a soldier in the Mexican Army circa 1836—the year of the Battle of the Alamo. Damascus steel has been around for centuries. However, it wasn’t until the 1970s that it was introduced to modern custom knives by a handful of bladesmiths in the United States, with BLADE Magazine Cutlery Hall-Of-Fame® member Bill Moran leading the way. Damascus gained traction among members of the American Bladesmith Society, which, along with Moran, was founded in 1976 by ABS master smiths Bill Bagwell and Don Hastings, and Cutlery Hall-Of-Famer/BLADE® field editor B.R. Hughes. From that point forward, more makers and more patterns began showing up at custom knife shows and in knife magazines. Since 21-year-old Jarrod Fiscus won with an axe in his appearance on Forged in Fire and also participates in frontier rendezvous events, it seems most appropriate that he would build a traditional pipe tomahawk. Jarrod handforged the head of 1080 carbon steel and the body of mild steel. He then forge-welded the pipe to the body. He said the “weeping heart” cutout is a design used frequently in Colonial days, from the Eastern woodlands to the Great Plains. Jarrod dyed the curly maple haft in the traditional manner with nitric acid. He poured the pewter inlays directly into the wood. He finished it all up with a brass cap and a mule deer antler plug.
