Gday Everyone, I've had enough of the Summer heat & humidity already and I’m looking forward to the colder months. The extreme seasons make it really sticky & uncomfortable and that's why Autumn and Spring, I find, are the most pleasurable for hunting. The dogs seem to work better and do not suffer as much! To be honest, I've been really quiet since Christmas on the hunting front and my brothers & my team of dogs are in a transition period of younger pups coming through after losing a good pair of handy hounds. I have been starting to get back into hunting regularly after my car accident, as I hadn’t been for quite a while. With my old dog keen and my young son Callum even keener, I organised a trip and with a phone call I was good to go. I asked my mate Mitch to see if he wanted to go too! We had caught a few average pigs, but on the last night we went for one last run and ran into this monster! We were lucky enough to watch the hit-up and the battle unfold. It was another hot/humid afternoon and we just had around 50ml of rain. My mate Brad & I decided to go for an afternoon hunt, so we walked along the edge of a swamp for a couple of kilometres. The dogs showed some good sign & bolted into the lantana, but shortly returned with no luck. We decided to go for a walk through the mozzie infested lantana and after some 500metres, we started to see some fresh pig sign. I have been reading Bacon Busters since I can remember. My old man brought them home all the time when I was a kid and I'm 24 now, haha! Time certainly flies! Anyway, I'm a sparky an hour west of Brisbane and I only get out west once every month or so if I'm lucky. I head out to Goondiwindi most trips, but every now and then head a bit further north. I have been hunting the hills at Barraba NSW for the last 15 years with my own dogs and we have caught many good boars over that time. This year I have lost my two main holders to old age and injury and now I have had to rely on my old finder to teach my new Bull Arab puppy how it’s done. What is it with tusks, trophies, ivory? For hundreds of years, man has harvested animals for food and utilised the rest of the carcass including meat, bone etc for tools and ornaments. The start of the Wet Season in the Cape changes everything! Pigs are on the move and locating a good boar during the wet carries a few more challenges than the dry. As the floodgates of Heaven open, many of the roads and tracks that were open during the dry become inaccessible and the ones that are open require a well-equipped vehicle to take them on. As I pulled back into the paddock in my truck, I caught this big solid fella just on sunset. My cousin was on the header and kept an eye on him while I flew home to grab my bitch. He just gradually strolled out of the crop onto some pea stubble where he stood ready to rumble. He'd been in the situation before the way he stood his ground and hit my bitch. Let’s get started! First we need to work out what shape we want, then to draw that shape on a piece of steel. The piece of steel being used this time is an annealed piece of 15N20. The easiest way to rough-cut it out, is probably with an angle grinder using a thin cutting disc and then the rest is ground to shape on a linisher. The knife I am making now will be for finer work, like caping out a boar and also handy to cut some meat off a good eating pig.
