British vehicle production fell by 12% last year and is set to fall further this year – but industry chiefs insist that it’s a short-term blip, caused by factories being retooled to build new electric models. The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders announced that 905,233 vehicles were produced in the UK in 2024, comprising 779,584 cars and 125,649 commercial vehicles. That represents a 14% year-on-year fall in car production but a 4% rise in commercial vehicle production, resulting in an overall decrease of 12%. It is the lowest number of cars made in the UK since 1954, excluding 2020 – an anomaly as a result of the Covid pandemic. Nor is the outlook for 2025 any rosier. Genesis is gearing up for what will bea pivotal year in the UK, as it ends sales of new pure-combustion cars and repositions itself following a turbulent four years since launching here. The influx of Chinese cars arriving in the UK shows no signs of abating. This week’s is the Jaecoo 7. Created by Chery, one of China’s largest car makers, Jaecoo is the sister brand of Omoda, which launched its 5 SUV here towards the end of last year. While Omoda is pitched at fashion-focused buyers, Jaecoo (the name is a blend of ‘jäger’, German for ‘hunter’, and ‘cool’) is aiming to undercut rivals in the premium SUV space with the off-road-focused, Range Rover Velar-inspired 7. The Lexus H2 ROV concept is, at first glance, perhaps the most spurious, frivolous vehicle the firm has ever produced. It’s a lightweight off-road buggy and that’s an odd fit for a brand that trades on a Japanese vision of premium luxury. It might be fantastic fun but it doesn’t feel like a bold vision of the future in the way you would expect of a concept. But, as Lexus chief engineer Takeaki Kato notes, premium car buyers still want to have fun. “Lexus road cars are more about luxury, but people who own them still like to play,” he says. “And there are Lexus owners, particularly in the US, who also have an off-road buggy to play with. A ston Martin will rapidly expand itshybrid line-up and increase the number of model variants it offers in the coming years, according to new boss Adrian Hallmark – and it will launch its first electric vehicle before the end of this decade. Former Bentley boss Hallmark took over as CEO of the sports car firm in September last year and has been working on a revised strategy for the coming decade. The US is the UK car industry’s secondbiggest export market, led by demand for British luxury and supercar brands. SMMT boss Mike Hawes remains cautious about the impact that new US president Donald Trump may have. He said: “It’s early days. The US approach to tariffs is on a marketby-market basis. There is nowhere else that makes high-luxury vehicles like the UK. If tariffs were imposed, that would put up the vehicle prices, which isn’t good for the American consumer and is inflationary. THE LEXUS LS, the first car launched by the Japanese luxury brand here 35 years ago, has been dropped from its UK line-up. This follows a sustained period of poor sales of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class rival: just 39 had been sold since the turn of the decade, including only three in 2024. It means the ES is the only Lexus saloon still sold here. Homologation and legislation issues also contributed to the demise of the LS, a Lexus spokesperson told Autocar, as did the popularity of the brand’s newly introduced LM MPV, which targets a similar market. Ever since 2020, when then prime minister Boris Johnson first outlined plans to ban the sale of new non-zeroemission cars from 2030 onwards, there has been more confusion than clarity. Under various subsequent UK governments, the date has moved from 2030 to 2035 and back, and all the while there has been a plan to allow the sale of certain hybrids – although nobody has yet specified exactly which sort. PARKING MAD I read with dismay that councils are yet again going to hammer motorists more for car parking charges in their towns and cities (News, 22 January). Motorists are just cash cows to the councils. No wonder they are dismayed at remote working: they lose income from their extortionate parking and emissions-zone fees. I particularly would want to call out the Dudley Council leader with his attitude of “no one will die from having to pay £1.50 to park”. This sums up the attitude of councils towards motorists. This facelift – or, in geek speak, the 992.2 iteration – of the 911 GT3 may not look so different from the car it replaces but, as is sometimes the case with Porsche’s GT division, detail changes are everything. I shall try to cover them all within my word limit. The GT3, as you may know, is the more track-focused version of the 911 – not as extreme as the GT3 RS, so still road-pliant. The fourth-generation C3 was reinvented with a major focus on affordability. And it is now followed by its bigger brother, the C3 Aircross, which follows a similar formula with a dollop of extra practicality. Since its launch in 2021, the Cupra Born has become something of an Autocar favourite. An unexpected one, you might say, because the mechanical package is very similar indeed to the worthy but unspectacular Volkswagen ID 3. Clearly there’s a bit of magic in the way Cupra can trim and set up a car. It is therefore a logical corollary that Cupra can do the same thing with the VW ID 4. WHEN MERCEDES-BENZ first showed the Concept CLA in 2023, it coined the phrase “the one-litre car of the electric age”, highlighting the lengths it was going to in achieving 93% efficiency between the battery and the driving wheels. The new CLA EV is due later this year, and with a potential range of 466 miles it will consume energy at a rate of 12kWh every 62 miles, or more than five miles for a single kWh. On the UK’s cheapest domestic energy tariffs, that would equate to about 1.3p per mile for fuel. THE SECOND-GENERATION C3 Aircross is also offered with an electric powertrain. His mum had one when he was growing up (actually, it was a 1.4 Rallye), so it was inevitable that one day Steve Hooker would have his own quick Peugeot 205. It’s a GTi – a 1.9, not a 1.6. It would be reasonable to assume that motorised commercial vehicles came some time later than cars, considering how puny the very first cars were. Take the Benz Viktoria of 1893, for instance: its single cylinder put out just 3hp.
