No anthropomorphic touches, coquettish details or solutions inspired by the jauntily likeable: here, unlike elsewhere, no gamble is being taken on “playful” interpretation even for the entry level model. The Peugeot 406 Coupé has turned twenty and for the occasion the Peugeot 406 Coupe Club Italia organised a concours d’élégance, on 3 June, 2017 in Milan, where prizes were awarded to the best preserved 406 Coupés. Four years ago, Citroën’s premium DS label was at a crossroads. French luxury and savoir faire had taken over the design department but that iconic DS nameplate needed more. Then, the March-2014 appointed CEO of PSA Groupe Carlos Tavares decided to shift DS upmarket as an independent luxury brand. ”That is what we had hoped for,” Thierry Metroz, head of DS design, recalls. “We had already developed a DS design strategy in 2012 which we implemented on the existing Citroën DS 3, 4 and 5 models, distinguished by a more prominent grille design. It may be the sporty soul, the charisma of the sculpted shapes or the athletic image, but in the imagination of many young designers the dream of designing a Lamborghini is one of the factors driving their passion for cars. For Ivan Borisov (Russia) and Giuseppe Ippoliti (Italy), students at the Master in Transportation Design of the SPD (Polytechnic School of Design), this dream came true within the Encierro project, the electric hypercar designed to respond to the briefing proposed by the school in collaboration with the Sant'Agata Bolognese style centre. This motor show, with its ‘open air’ formula, is much more than a static display of cars. In addition to the stands of 56 different brands, the event offers a varied calendar of attractions, ranging from vintage cars and heritage events, which always attract huge crowds, to the vehicles of the future and displays of the latest concept cars from carmakers and body-work specialists. Ferrari marked its 70th anniversary by exhibiting its most iconic models; Volvo did the same to celebrate 90 years of activity. There’s nothing random here about the choice of name. For over twenty years up until 2011, the Eclipse was a highly successful Mitsubishi coupé. Passing on the name to this crossover means conferring attributes of sportiness to what is essentially an SUV.
