But until recently, efforts to convince consumers, businesses and governments to ban the production and sale of fur largely fell on deaf ears. As you read this, 80% of the country’s annual 1.5 billion-pound pumpkin crop is finding its way to retail outlets—many of them setting out Howden pumpkins, the fat orange heirloom variety best for carving jack-o’-lanterns.
