It’s a simple concept: fix up1 an item instead of tossing2 it in the rubbish3. But in today’s throwaway4 society, the ‘make do and mend5’ philosophy of previous generations has been lost. Across the EU, thirty-five million tonnes of repairable goods6 are discarded annually, along with twenty-two million damaged pieces of furniture7 and 11,000 bicycles. Thankfully, that trend is changing, helped by a global network of repair cafés that make learning repair skills fun and easy.
VOLUNTEERS
Repair cafés started in 2007 when Martine Postma, a Dutch environmentalist, produced a guide for her local community with tips on how to repair clothes, furniture, electrical appliances8, bicycles, crockery9, toys and other household items10. A Repair Café in Amsterdam soon followed, where items could be brought in to be mended for free.…
