A DURBAN medical student, Mohamed Hoosen Suleman, has lent his voice to the fight against pertinent global health issues. Frans van Reenen is not a familiar name. But anyone who has travelled regularly on the N3 between Durban and Johannesburg will be familiar with Van Reenen’s Pass. It is the stretch of road that winds through the Drakensberg Mountain and was initially plotted by Frans van Reenen way back in 1856. He owned the farm Sandspruit which was at the foot of the pass. The stretch is about 36km and generally takes about half an hour to complete by car. But, last week, a few hundred truck drivers were stranded on the road for almost 48 hours. Long wait for KZN crime statistics IT HAS been almost three weeks since South Africa’s national crime statistics were released to the public but there has been no breakdown of the numbers for KwaZulu-Natal. Experts and opposition parties agree there is a need to provide the numbers so that strategies can be put in place to counter crime trends. Police Minister Bheki Cele released the national crimes statistics for January to March this year on June 3. Shortly thereafter, Lieutenant-General Elias Mawela, the Gauteng police commissioner, and Lieutenant-General Thembisile Patekile, the Western Cape police commissioner, provided feedback to their provincial legislatures about the crime situation in their province and how they intended protecting people. Legendary sportsman and schoolteacher Rowan Ramtahal will be remembered for his love of golf and his love for people. Ramtahal, 73, of Reservoir Hills, died on Monday after a short illness. Ramtahal who was born in 1949 in Alpine Road, Springfield, started his career as a soccer player. At age 10, Ramtahal’s passion for golf began when he started caddying for some of the top Indian golfers at the time. THE eThekwini Municipality began implementing water rationing from Monday in areas supplied by the Durban Heights Water Treatment Plant. Over the next 10 to 12 months, residents in affected areas will only have access to water during some parts of the day, on a rotational basis. These include Malvern, Shallcross, Umlazi, Chatsworth, Newlands East and West, Effingham, KwaMashu, Phoenix, Westville, Durban North and uMhlanga. In a joint statement, eThekwini and Umgeni Water officials said the water rationing had become necessary due to reduced supplies from the treatment plant. WITHIN days, residents in Gqeberha (formerly Port Elizabeth) could be without water, thanks to a crippling drought that has seen dams dry up. About 40% of residents living in Athlone Park, PE Central, Summerstrand, Fairview, the Marock Road informal settlement, Millpark and Malabar, among other areas, are expected to be without water by the end of the month. This comes after the Impofu Dam was decommissioned because it dried up two weeks ago. Water levels at other nearby dams are also low. The Churchill Dam is at 8% and expected to run dry by Friday. The combined water levels of the Loerie, Kouga, and Groendal dams, which supply areas in Gqeberha, Kariega, Despatch, and Colchester, are just over 11%.
