‘Building a special never makes financial sense. It’s as much about the journey’ YES, NO AND yes again. In the first part of the project, where the aim was to improve the bike in a simple, bolt-on way that any home mechanic could achieve, the spend on modifications and fettling came in around £4500. For that we got a bike that weighed 20kg less than standard, made 8bhp more, but more importantly felt modern. That outlay was enough for us to shed the weight and fit modern GSX-R running gear and wheels, a race shock, a digital dash, lightweight battery, radial brakes and master cylinder, plus new discs, a Power Commander, quickshifter and dyno set-up.
And it was easy – each month there were measurable, incremental improvements as we went…
