PERHAPS IT WAS BECAUSE HE’D just dropped acid, or maybe it was the sight of a black Irishman in a white kaftan singing Donnybrook Fair, but when Eric Bell witnessed Phil Lynott and Brian Downey performing with the band Orphanage at Dublin’s Countdown Club in December 1969, he had an epiphany.
“Philip was so skinny, tailor-made for stardom, and Brian’s drumming was incredibly mature for his age,” recalls Bell today. “I thought, Wow! These are the guys I want!”
