Earlier this year, I was lucky enough to spend an afternoon with artist Lorraine O’Grady, who we were photographing for a story on an exhibition of her new work. O’Grady, who passed away in December at the age of 90, had been making art for more than four decades. She saw Black beauty and saw it existing at the center of the cultural conversation at a time when the art establishment didn’t. But it was only relatively recently that the art world began to fully embrace everything she stood for. “I like the idea that people are starting to catch up with me,” she said.
