Boipelo Mere Staff reporter A PROMINENT local businessman, Spiro Louverdis, 48, pleaded guilty on a charge of illegal diamond dealing and was sentenced to five years’ imprisonment, wholly suspended for five years, by the Kimberley Magistrate’s Court this week.
Louverdis was also fined an amount of R1.5 million.
This follows an investigation by the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (the Hawks) that started in 2014.
Hawks provincial spokesperson Nomthandazo Mnisi said that Louverdis was arrested in 2014 along with 13 other suspects during the execution of the project.
