Find convicts sent to Australia
From 1787 until 1867, over 160,000 convicted criminals (including 25,000 women), were transported across the seas to Australia. Most were banished for seven or 14 years and never returned. Records online can show details about your ancestor’s trial, as well as their sentencing, imprisonment, transportation, and any information kept by the colony after their arrival.
Search the Digital Panopticon
The Digital Panopticon website (www.snipca.com/51377) brings many of these records together, covering the details of 90,000 convicts. Click ‘Search’ at the top, then enter names and keywords, such as location. Click ‘Add more search criteria’ to add details such as occupation, year of birth, where they were imprisoned and even whether they had any distinguishing marks or tattoos.
