Increasingly popping up in hip bars on both sides of the Atlantic is pétillant naturel (or pét-nat), a gently sparkling wine. This new trend is actually the revival of an ancient technique, méthode ancestrale, where fermentation is halted in winter and restarted in spring. The result is unfiltered full flavours and a finer bubble. ‘I love pet-nats because they break the monopoly of champagne and prosecco,’ says Pierre Malouf, general manager at Ottolenghi restaurants. ‘They are fresh, not too high in alcohol, and have a serious backbone. River beds W, BRISBANE Brisbane has always been somewhat overshadowed by its flashier southern siblings Sydney and Melbourne, but the arrival of the W brand on the city’s river foreshore may be a sign of a rebalancing. Taking up an entire city block in Brisbane Quarter – a new mixed-use development in the CBD – the 312-room tower was designed by Australian architects DBI, with interiors by Nic Graham, Fabio Ongarato and Amanda Love. Without straying from the W’s outre vibe of bold patterns and colours, the designers have incorporated quiet riparian themes that range from stylised reeds lining the reception staircase to tidal markings based on river flood lines weaving through the corridors. Featuring Grcic’s signature pared-down geometric lines, ‘Meteo’ is currently available in a basic version, which opens with a classic manual pulley system, and, for those who prefer their garden furniture to do the work for them, a version with an integrated gas piston for opening and closing. Offering a new take on the classic 1950s room-divider bookcase, the ‘Jack’ system is available in 14 different heights and boasts a discreet telescopic adjustment mechanism to make sure it fits perfectly wherever it is installed. Fashion giant Fendi has made its first foray into kitchen design, joining forces with Italian specialist Scic to launch a new brand, Fendi Cucine. Its debut offering comprises two kitchen islands, intended for domestic or professional use. ‘Ginger’, combining marble and copper finishes, and ‘Kurkum’, a stainless steel monolith (pictured), are both designed by Italian architect Marco Costanzi, who also worked with Fendi on its new Milan offices and the renovation of its iconic HQ at Rome’s Palazzo della Civilta Italiana, and has created products for Fendi Casa. But whatever the motivations, the majestic Roman arch is obvious in its origins, and loops back to more recent moments in design history such as the Memphis era. For Paris-based jewellery designer Annelise Michelson, the shiny gloss of industrial car-spray palettes has long been a source of joy. ‘It’s the energy that these colours express. They make everything feel exciting, like a fast sports car,’ she says, pondering the affinity for vivid coated metal in her own designs. A new skincare line by Aman does its best to embody all the sense of place, becalming architecture, nature and wellbeing that the resort chain famously espouses. Aman Skincare is launching on the occasion of its 30th anniversary and Kengo Kuma was charged with designing the range’s packaging. The resorts’ Eastern origins are channelled in the sake bottle silhouettes while Japanese rice paper, ceramic and burnt cedar are referenced in the containers’ high-tech finish. An exotic roll-call of ingredients includes powdered pearl, cactus oil, algae, wild-harvested butters and muds from the rainforest, amethyst and jade, copper and silver.
