Sounds like something from Back to the Future. It really does, although with Holoride you very much do need roads. It’s basically VR for the car (but definitely not the driver). While that might sound like a one-way ticket to Vomitsville, Holoride is different. The headset connects to the car via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth and uses real-time motion, location and navigational data from the vehicle’s onboard sensors to mimic its movement on the screens in front of your eyes. Not true – that spirit now lives on in the Nord CE 2. CE stands for Core Edition, which roughly translates to ‘all the hardware you need, with none of what you don’t, at a price your wallet can appreciate’. Surefire Gaming Bunker What’s the story? Don’t know Surefire? It’s a new brand from Verbatim, an old master in the storage world. The Gaming Bunker is in one sense the least advanced SSD here as it uses a SATA drive rather than the nippier NVMe kind. But that only matters if you have a Thunderbolt connector, and Surefire jazzes things up with some RGB lights on the case. The shape is classic, the aesthetic is very much ‘gamer’. Is it any good? Although Apple’s HomeKit platform was released way back in 2014, it’s lagging behind some of the other ecosystems. That’s because, while rivals constantly churn out new smart kit, Apple prefers to leave HomeKit to third-party makers… and it gives them very tough targets in order to be certified (see panel, p19). But the mid-priced Xiaomi 11T Pro really does qualify as a flagship smartphone, in at least one small but useful way.
