SIGN LANGUAGE
Sign languages are forms of visual communication that use hand, face and body movements for communication. Sign language is often used by people who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing, but that doesn’t mean that all Deaf or Hard of Hearing people learn a signed language. Many sign languages are used around the world! We have included Australian Sign Language (Auslan), New Zealand Sign Language (NZSL), British Sign Language (BSL) and American Sign Language (ASL) in this guide. To sign ‘hello’ in Auslan, NZSL, BSL, or ASL, use your dominant (right or left) hand. If you usually use both hands, choose a dominant hand for signing. Your body language is always important too, so don’t forget friendly facial expressions – smile!
