THE GNOME RESERVE
Everyone knows what gnomes do. They fish, push barrows and smoke pipes. That’s pretty much it. Or rather, that’s it for domesticated gnomes. Visit the four acres of dappled woodland comprising the Gnome Reserve in the Devonshire hamlet of West Putford and you’ll discover that, given the freedom to run wild, they also ride pigs, flock to fairgrounds, fly air ambulance helicopters, abseil down trees and stage Olympics.
The reserve was founded almost 40 years ago by Ann Atkin. In retrospect, she admits, she had much to learn. “The very first year, back in ’79, we didn’t have hats,” she says. “Take this with a pinch of salt, but I thought it was embarrassing for the gnomes – all these big people standing, laughing, pointing.…
