Nonhyun Matryoshka is located in a residential area of four to five-story buildings, situated deep within Gangnam’s main street. Existing housing developments usually require closed boundaries to prevent an invasion of privacy. However, new neighbourhood living facilities desire demarcation in order to populate each domain with its own distinctive features, as these spaces are made up of many diverse programmes. As such, it has been planned to mark this duality. The site is rectangular with a pyramidal frame, tapering at the top due to setback regulations. A hard crust has been built here to make the internal space flexible. This crust becomes a structure which includes a boundary within a boundary, becoming smaller and overlapping at the top. The France Embassy in Korea, located in Seoul Seodaemun-gu, Hapdong, is being constructed after 53 years. On Aug. 1, the French ambassador to Korea announced that the French Embassy in Korea (embassy building, ambassador residence, office) which was first built in 1962, will be presenting a design for its construction by the Aug. 28. The French Embassy was divided into the official residence and office in Hapdong, the culture centre in Bongrae-dong, the tourist bureau in Seosomun-dong, and the economic commercial agency in Yeoksam-dong. An Architect’s Attitude towards Redevelopment A new redevelopment market is in formation in Seoul, situated around the multiplex housings or commercial buildings that were built during the 1970s and 80s, before the building energy standards were set. According to the Construction Economy Research Institute of Korea in 2013, the renovation of commercial (office) buildings is taking up more than 40% of the building permit area since the beginning of the 2000s. Green renovation, which focuses on energy performance improvement, is making a rise with the eco-friendly trend since 2010. Neighbourhood in Changing Everyday Life Without segmented regulations such as ‘zoning’, ‘district unit planning’, ‘residential areas’ (exclusive residential area, general residential area, quasi-residential area), urban areas like Gangnam of Seoul which is developed relatively in a short period, would have faced serious problems in the natural landscape and residential environment, due to the disorderly development of high-rise offices and commercial facilities. Easter Island has almost been erased from history as it has no clear documentation of its past. Mysterious Moai statues are the only evidence of civilization. I gained a similar impression of Samjeon-dong, Seoul. Modern Moai at Samjeon-dong began with the consideration of a symbiotic structure for a city, including housing created by stacking commercial facilities and residential units on the everyday cultural ground.
