The accident took place on Chorley Close, Bonela, last Wednesday while Demrugaram was walking home with a friend. PHOENIX Child Welfare is appealing to the public to consider becoming temporary foster parents. Aroona Chetty, the director of the welfare organisation, said the number of children needing foster homes was a concern. “Over the past decade, the population of children and young people in foster care has grown dramatically, and the challenges associated with achieving permanency for them have increased,” said Chetty. “There are many children in our society’s case-load who need placement with families, who can ensure their safety and basic needs are met. DR MORGAN Naidoo, an educationist, has received an award from the National Examinations and Assessment Committee for his contributions to the administration of national public examinations in South Africa. Naidoo, who served in education for more than 40 years, was regarded as an expert on normalisation processes, which aimed to ensure objectivity and fairness in examinations. Although he retired at the end of February 2010 after handling the matriculation examination in KwaZulu-Natal since 1976, the award was only made recently. Having started teaching in 1967, he taught for nine years before he was promoted into education management. Naidoo, who was chief director of examinations assurance and assessment in KZN, contributed nationally by setting up the inter-provincial committee on examinations tasked with establishing common examination practices for the country. I AM a loyal customer of BP and generally fill up petrol at a BP garage opposite the Chatsworth Stadium. But one morning last week, the garage was busy because only two bowsers were operational. I’m writing to shed light on the employment of close to 10 000 temporary workers under the previous EPWP (Expanded Public Works Programme) and its hidden political agenda. The programme was initiated during the time Jacob Zuma was president, employing hundreds of thousands of people in the country. THE poultry sector is battling one of the most severe outbreaks of avian influenza in South African history. This compounds the pressures that food producers are facing because of the load shedding crisis. Each has negatively impacted the industry but, together, they created substantial operational challenges throughout the poultry supply chain. On Friday night, Muhammad Shuaib Sadak and a passenger were travelling along Crossmoor Drive in Chatsworth when they were involved in an attempted hijacking that cost Sadak his life. When the pair were confronted by the hijackers, they tried to get away, but the attackers opened fire. The passenger escaped without injuries but Sadak was shot in the head. IN AN exciting milestone for lunar scientists across the globe, India’s Chandrayaan-3 lander touched down 375 miles (600km) from the south pole of the moon on August 23. How can it then be expected that police officers at grass-roots level would keep their hands clean if the SAPS’s political chief did not? They played together and died together – that’s the story of Brian Zindela, Keegan Morgan and Stephen Pillay. The three friends, all from Trenance Manor in Phoenix, were returning home during the early hours of last Saturday when they were killed in a car crash. They had gone out to a nightclub in uMhlanga to celebrate Zindela’s 21st birthday. The crash happened on the N2 South in the vicinity of the KwaMashu off-ramp. MUNIRA Mohideen, a 66-year-old Musgrave resident, was stabbed to death by three men who allegedly gained access to her apartment complex. She lived in Il Monte on Musgrave Road on the Berea. The metro’s bloated employment roster is packed with comrades, cronies and cadres who, if not incompetent and unqualified, are there to live off the dwindling largesse that ratepayers are providing. Compounding the issue is the fact that they are entrenched and enjoy trade union protection.
