THE eThekwini Municipality has handed over the project to erect an 1860 Indian indentured monument to the premier's office in KwaZulu-Natal. The decision was made at a recent council meeting. Plans to erect the monument started in 2010 when South Africa commemorated the 150th anniversary of the arrival of Indians. In 2015, the premier’s office and the municipality signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) and the premier’s office paid the municipality R4.865 million to erect the monument. An organising committee was formed, which included Seelan Achary, of the Shri Mariammen Temple in Mount Edgecombe, and representatives from the municipality and the premier’s office. SHOALS of dead fish have washed up along the shores of the Umgeni River in the vicinity of Durban’s Blue Lagoon. This has raised concern among subsistence fishermen whose livelihoods are under threat. Heinz de Boer, the DA’s spokesperson on environmental affairs, said the sewage effluent at municipal water treatment works caused the fish kill along the Blue Lagoon this week. “We conducted oversight visits to various water treatment works with national environmental inspectors (government) on Monday and discovered a black tar-like substance. There’s no doubt a sewage spill caused the massive fish kill. We suspect the spill occurred in the northern water treatment works,” said De Boer. POLICE are searching for the suspects who shot and killed a 9-year-old boy in Midrand last Tuesday. Mikaheel Chetty was killed outside the Nizamiye Primary and High School at about 3pm. He was in the car with his mother, Shimmi Chetty, and his 13-year-old sister. Chetty was shot in the head and chest and was airlifted to a hospital for surgery. Her daughter escaped unharmed. Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo, the Gauteng police spokesperson, said that following the shooting the suspects jumped into a nearby vehicle, and fled the scene. “The motive behind the shooting cannot be confirmed at this stage. The Football Association (FA) charged Thomas Tuchel on Monday, for improper conduct over his comments about referee Anthony Taylor after Chelsea’s Premier League draw with Tottenham.
