THE Zondo Commission has recently handed over phase 1 of a three-part report to President Cyril Ramaphosa. The report apparently focuses mainly on state-owned entities. There is damning evidence against alleged perpetrators,with many of them holding high positions in the government. We should bear in mind that all evidence presented by alleged state capturers and witnesses was done under oath and is binding. This means law enforcement agencies, such as the National Prosecuting Authority, Asset Forfeiture Unit, Hawks and so on, should be able to undertake prosecutions and convictions unhindered. A NEW law should be introduced by the South African government to protect whistle-blowers who take the risk to expose corruption, the Commission of Inquiry into State Capture has said. The government should introduce or amend existing legislation to strengthen the protection of any person disclosing information to expose corruption, fraud or undue influence in public procurement activities, the commission said in a report released last Tuesday. Presenting the report to President Cyril Ramaphosa in Pretoria, Acting Chief Justice Raymond Zondo said the first part of the three-part document commended whistle-blowers for the role that they played in fighting vice. Michael Kanan, his son Mikyle and nephew Keagan Pillay appeared in the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Friday. The men, aged between 26 and 45, were charged with murder. It is alleged that they beat the 36- year-old Shallcross resident to death in Clairwood on December 28 and dumped his body in the boot of their car. They allegedly tied his hands and feet with a chain, which was then placed around his neck and secured with a padlock. Police were patrolling the area when they received information about a man being assaulted by five people on Flower Road in Clairwood, provincial spokesperson Colonel Thembeka Mbele said.…

Four days earlier, DNA analysis confirmed that a body found dumped in the Roodeplaat Dam was that of the 43-year-old Lenasia businessman. Khan’s body was mutilated. The father of four owned Ewing Security. The business had been operating for 18 years and it has branches in Randburg, Johannesburg and Mariannhill, Durban. According to the company website, they specialised in the installation and repairs of electronic security devices like CCTV cameras, laser alarm systems and professional guarding services. THE year has started off very well for the guys offshore, the guys on the shore and those who prefer freshwater. The offshore fishing has been very good along the entire KwaZulu-Natal coastline. The game-fish have been keeping the reels screaming and the hatches full. The North Coast has been the place to go, with most launches proving successful. It is worrying as parents are paying exorbitant amounts for uniforms. In recent years, we have experienced the unfortunate effects of the Covid-19 pandemic on our education system and the adjustments learners have to make in order to stay abreast, along with the uncertainty and disruption it causes. The opening of schools is a relief for most cash-strapped parents. Parents, particularly those from disadvantaged communities, are facing financial constraints.
