While we all suffered under the dreaded virus and the lockdown rules, thousands of schoolgirls threw caution to the wind, had sexual relations with their partners, and fell pregnant. While we concede that some of these teenage girls are victims of sexual perverts, others were willing partners in this crime of underage sex. Last year, while the country was under lockdown, underage girls between 10 and 19 became mothers of 136 386 babies. In the previous year it was bad enough, when teenage girls had 13 000 babies. ONE of the greatest issues that is encountered within the human species is violence upon one another, more especially gender-based violence (GBV). The worst and most devastating of this violence is when it is against young children and babies. GBV is on the increase. It is mostly reported by women. Abuse against men is hardly reported because it is regarded by some men as a weakness. This is unfortunate. Irrespective of who is being mistreated, there is an underlying reason for this behaviour. But this does not provide a licence for the perpetrator to commit these acts of violence. They must seek counselling or some form of rehabilitation. A SRI LANKAN working in Pakistan, Priyantha Kumara, was lynched by a mob of hundreds of people on December 3, 2021, over allegations of blasphemy, or a sacrilegious act. After being assaulted, he was dragged into the streets and set on fire, and the lynching was recorded and shared widely on social media. Such tragic killings in Pakistan over blasphemy accusations are not just about extrajudicial vigilantism. A MAN was allegedly beaten to death on Saturday evening after he tried to desecrate the sacred Guru Granth Sahib at the Golden Temple in Amritsar. The youth, reportedly from Uttar Pradesh, entered the restricted area and tried to pick the sword kept in front of the Guru Granth Sahib. He was caught by security and was handed over to the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) office, where he was beaten to death. Yasmin Zaher and Claire Gounon AFTER collecting dust for nearly two years, the 228 rooms at Bethlehem’s Ararat Hotel were scrubbed last month in anticipation of a post-lockdown Christmas boom, hopes that have again been dashed by the coronavirus. A large Christmas tree and decorations did little to brighten a deserted lobby. Like other hotels in Bethlehem, the Ararat has no guests, with the tree offering cheer to no one but the seven out of 105 employees who have not been fired. “We were expecting 70% occupancy for Christmas but all overseas reservations have been cancelled,” said Augustine Shomali, a manager at the hotel. DORADO, tuna and couta. These are just the top three species being caught along KZN. The offshore fishing has been phenomenal and it’s definitely the time to get on to the water. The Durban area has been full of charters and a splash of recreational anglers. The charters have done well with the dorado. These have mainly been due to their “secret spots”. The tuna are around most of the spots off Durban, so if you need some action on the boat, troll some lipped lures and wait for the strike.
