Mohammadh Sayed made the statement following several reports that suggested it was a revenge killing for his son’s death in October 2019. Zayyaan,10, who suffered from reflux, underwent a laparoscopic procedure conducted by Munshi and Dr Peter Beale, a paediatric surgeon, at Johannesburg’s Park Lane Hospital. Bid to give the deaf community a voice CHANELLE LUTCHMAN THE acting head of department at a school for the deaf believes it would be a victory if sign language was recognised as South Africa’s 12th official language. Asha Udith Khelawan, of the VN Naik School for the Deaf, said that as a deaf person she knew and had seen the struggles the deaf community had faced. Khelawan said if sign language were to become the 12th official language, it would mean that she would be equal to all South Africans. “I would have an identity. Crematorium stays closed as new furnaces fail CHANELLE LUTCHMAN FOR MORE than a decade, residents in Chatsworth and surrounding areas have been unable to cremate the bodies of their loved ones at the Mobeni Heights Crematorium. Despite two furnaces being installed at the government facility over the past three years, the crematorium remains closed. Joburg businessman kidnapped by ‘cops’ JANINE MOODLEY HAMZA Khan, a Gauteng businessman, was kidnapped on Friday by two men allegedly posing as policemen. The kidnappers, dressed in white, confronted Khan, 30, outside his family’s butchery in Fordsburg at about 9.30am. The incident was captured on CCTV and shared on social media by Yusuf Abramjee, an anti-crime activist. Khan was removed from his vehicle and into an awaiting car. Abramjee said the suspects were allegedly posing as policemen, a method used in other cases where businessmen were kidnapped. He said in previous incidents in Fordsburg and Mayfair, the suspects informed the victims that they were under arrest. The victims did not resist. Respect for other religions crucial IT IS COMMON practice in thousands of homes for the followers of Hinduism to rise every day at 3am, do the necessary and begin their prayer and meditation at about 4am. Theresa Moodley, an ex-policewoman, said she worked with the mission for over 40 years and was one of the first group of people to visit there. Undertakers slam new rules CHARLENE SOMDUTH THE Clare Estate Crematorium has implemented new rules under level 1 of the lockdown – but funeral undertakers are unhappy with the decisions made at the private facility. Court cases backlogged in lockdown Task team now set up CHANELLE LUTCHMAN THE wheels of justice are expected to turn faster under level 1 of the national lockdown. Last month, Ronald Lamola, Minister of Justice, said that at the end of March, a total of 194 225 cases had been carried forward to the following financial year that started in April. He said 62 161 of those cases qualified nationally as the backlog in the district and regional courts. Poor need help more than ever SOUTH Africa will be affected for a while beyond Covid-19 – and, sadly, will affect indigent households the most. The coronavirus has exacerbated inequalities such as take-home salary scales, education, housing and health care, among others. Ordinary people, especially the low-income earners and workers in insecure employment and the less privileged people living in informal settlements, have been most affected by retrenchments and wage cuts. Stiff sentences needed to curb racism ONCE again we have seen racism rear its ugly head.
