It’s our duty to fight injustice
THE killing of George Floyd by law enforcement officers uncovers, once again, age-old discrimination in the US and in other countries like Palestine.
The anger we are seeing over Floyd’s death, alongside the deaths of special needs man, Palestinian Iyad Halak, Ahmaud Arbery and Breonna Taylor, among others, is connected to some countries’ failure to make universal reforms that address racism, discrimination and police violence against communities of colour.
Similarly, the unfortunate death of Collins Khosa by soldiers and metro police in Alexandra in Johannesburg on Easter Friday requires thorough scrutiny and investigation.
The right to dignity, safety and life and to be protected from torture, inhuman and degrading behaviour are human rights contained in the South African Constitution.
These rights cannot be surrendered…
