“THE BIGGEST MISCONCEPTION about Hawaiian cuisine is that it’s limited to what’s served at luaus,” says Gerald San Jose, manager of Noreetuh (Noreetuh.com), a Hawaiian-inspired hot spot in New York’s East Village. Last fall, after mounting a solo show at Joshua Liner Gallery in New York, Bay Area-based artist Libby Black realized that she was in treacherous waters. The lows that follow the highs of producing an exhibition are all too predictable and frighteningly real. To keep herself afloat, she plied her most trusted materials—paper, hot glue, and acrylic paint—and fashioned a Goyard life vest. “That’s why I feel very tense about the visibility stuff—because people seem to think that retweets and reshares and social media are going to end trans violence.” The first thing you notice about DarkMatter is the lipstick. It’s bold, caked on real thick, defiant. They wear it like a badge or a weapon—like a big “fuck you.” Trans South Asian performers Alok Vaid-Menon and Janani Balasubramanian created DarkMatter in New York, where they’ve appeared at Lincoln Center and hosted sold-out shows at such venues as La MaMa Experimental Theater and the Brooklyn Museum. Just two days before she wed her partner, Rhea Butcher, in December, she filmed a stand-up show in her native Chicago, welcoming the sizable audience to her “bachelor party,” as she called it. Additive-free, minimally processed, no preservatives…no, we’re not talking about dinner. Natural is the newest watchword in wine, and just as in food, it’s all the rage with the health-conscious set. Mega-batched “industrial” wines can contain all kinds of mystery ingredients (everything from beet sugar to charcoal and the scarily named additive “Mega Purple”), and since wine is not regulated by the FDA, winemakers aren’t required to list them. THE MOVIE PAST teaches us our future. This is true even of forgotten or never-known oddities such as the movie version of Terrence McNally’s Broadway play The Ritz, directed by Richard Lester and now celebrating its 40th anniversary. I found The Ritz—like buried treasure—in a dollar store’s used-DVD bin. Rewatching it triggered my rediscovery of that period in film history when gay subjects were just gaining visibility and mainstream mediamakers were advancing recognition at the same time as the out-front cultural progress of disco. After 21 cycles of America’s Next Top Model, many were through with Tyra Banks and her reality competition. Then came Nyle DiMarco, a 6-foot-2 blue-eyed beau who happens to be deaf, a first for the show. “The funny part is, it was never challenging for me,” says the Queens, N.Y.–born model. “I have over 25 deaf family members, and we all use American Sign Language.” DiMarco recently launched ASL App, a concept he pitched during an episode of ANTM. “We just hit 300,000 downloads, a milestone,” he says, adding that he hopes to reach a million.
