Following the ‘enforced innovations’ of its digital edition last year, Jazz Fest Berlin returns with another hybrid continent-spanning programme from 4 to 7 November. Saxophonist Chelsea Carmichael’s debut solo album, The River Doesn’t Like Strangers, will be the first album released on Shabaka Hutchings’ new label Native Rebel Recordings and will hit the streets on 22 October. Carmichael has established herself with an impressive array of collaborations including Arun Ghosh, James Beckwith, Theon Cross, Neue Grafik Ensemble and with bassist Arthur O’Hara’s Trio with drummer Harry Pope. Septuagenarian Spontaneous Musical Ensemble saxophonist Trevor Watts returns with a new trio - Eternal Triangle – to play compositions that were originally inspired by rhythmic structures from Africa and South America as well as jazz and European musical forms. Built on series of duos between Watts, pianist Veryan Weston and percussionist Jamie Harris, Watts/Western first played together in Watts’ Moiré Music in the early 1980s and have since enjoyed a long collaboration in his 'Dialogues' project. When Mats Gustafsson’s Fire! Orchestra first appeared in 2013, the Scandinavian ensemble raised eyebrows with its grandiose scope and unwieldy 28-person line-up. But those with a longer memory will recall the granddaddy of such quixotic ventures: British pianist Keith Tippett’s Centipede, which boasted around 50 members and set a high bar in terms of crazed ambition. Tippett formed the behemoth that became known as Centipede in 1970 by fusing his own group with some of the leading jazz-rock outfits then active in the UK – Soft Machine, Nucleus and King Crimson. These groups were all closely related, sometimes sharing members, and Tippett himself had already appeared on In the Wake of Poseidon, the first of three King Crimson albums he would contribute to in 1970 and 1971. There’s an online video of Xhosa Cole at the final of BBC Young Jazz Musician 2020, playing alongside Nikki Yeoh’s piano, with the Mondesir brothers providing bass and drums. The saxophonist has the kind of assurance and erudition you would expect from an established jazz star, and with his close cropped hair and wide-lapelled chalk stripe suit he looks the part. His soloing throughout the jumps and repetitions of a brisk reading of Thelonious Monk’s 'Played Twice' reveals an effortless flow of ideas, clever without being tricksy, always respecting the tune. The first disc contains a set of nine studio pieces recorded at Leeds Conservatoire, all of which showcase a formidable meeting of musical minds. Such is the level of empathy on display that it’s genuinely difficult to discern with any confidence just who’s doing what. Nope – they are/were all audiophiles, lovers of good sound, willing to spend wonga to ensure the best possible listening experience. Farewell to Alan Luff The superb jazz portrait painter – and lifelong friend of jazz – Alan Luff died aged 94 in May this year. For many years Alan’s regular column ‘Anec-Dotal’ appeared in Jazz Journal International, always accompanied by a sketch of a musician. Born in London, Alan’s passion for jazz was first ignited when, aged 11, his father took him to see Fats Waller at New Cross. One of his many close friends was peerless jazz broadcaster Peter Clayton, who didn’t drive, so Alan was happily called upon to chauffer him to countless gigs, including the BBC Studios at Maida Vale. To commemorate the tenth year since the death of British jazz composer, bassist and bandleader Graham Collier, London-based reissue specialist My Only Desire Records is to release (on 29 October) a February 1975 recording of his previously unreleased suite British Conversations. The recording was commissioned by Sveriges Radio and features lead soloists, trumpeter Harry Beckett and guitarist Ed Speight, who were regulars in Collier’s band, Graham Collier Music. They play alongside the station’s resident big band, The Swedish Radio Jazz Group – made up of the hottest players on the 1970s Scandi jazz scene – including saxophonists Arne Domnérus, Claes Rosendahl and Lennart Åberg, trumpeter Jan Allan, pianist Bengt Hallberg, guitarist Rune Gustafsson and drummer Egil Johansen. It’s hard to believe that it’s nearly a year ago that the EFG London Jazz Festival took the plunge into its first all-digital edition in a largely successful attempt to keep going despite the hard autumn lockdown. So to see it make a full live return this month is extremely heartening, as the London Jazz Festival is often symbolic of the power of collaboration, pushing the limits and elevating jazz, in its myriad forms to a new level of creativity and imagination. Progressive jazz outfits World Service Project and Roller Trio hit the road this autumn for a six-date UK tour, on a delayed sojourn to promote WSP’s 2019 album Hiding In Plain Sight. Led by keyboardist/composer Dave Morecroft, punk-jazz crew WSP play music from their most recent album that was inspired by the issues surrounding Brexit, with ‘suitably febrile and fevered sonics’, while Mercury-nominated Roller Trio continue their high-intensity exploration of high-wire improv, electronics and complex riffage. Joanna Duda was in her mid-teens, tinkering with MP3s on the family computer in Gdansk, Poland, when she found herself at the intersection of two songs that, by accident, were running simultaneously. It was a sound so complex and free that it stopped her in her tracks, and sent her brain into overdrive. “All the rules I knew about music were erased,” says Duda, 38, now a multi award-winning pianist, composer, producer and interdisciplinary artist. “The sound was completely new, a whole spectrum of itself. I felt light-headed. I had butterflies in my stomach. The outcome, as showcased by this album, is a tighter musical vision and a powerful contemporary sound. Anthony Wood, visionary promoter of improvised music (1970s), founder of the improvised music magazine The Wire (1982) and adventurer died, aged 73, in a tragic motorcycling accident in Yorkshire on 15 September. Born to be wild, music and motorbiking was Anthony’s lifelong passion. But his first mission was to elevate ‘to heavenly heights’ what was, at the time, unkindly dismissed as ‘squeaky-bonk music’. Anthony came of age in the mid 1960s in Ashford, Kent, where he was suffocating, ‘going down slow’.
