Looking amazingly like a Ghibli film, this anime fantasy is from a new studio called Ponoc, but involved many Ghibli animators and artists. The director, a protégé of Miyazaki, previously helmed Arrietty and When Marnie Was There.
Based on a 1971 children’s book, the film presents a splendidly painted Shropshire. Mary, a perky but insecure young girl, finds a broomstick that whisks her over the clouds to a magic school. It’s more flamboyantly fantastical than Ghibli’s recent films, with a terrific high-speed prologue full of fire and flying.
