Some 25,000 people are expected to be employed during the construction of HS2, reaching a peak in the early 2020s.
HS2 Ltd spokesman Alastair Cowan confirmed to RAIL that most will be employed by subcontractors, and that recruitment has already begun - for example, on early works and ground investigation.
In February 23’s Royal Assent announcement, the Government trumpeted that 2,000 apprenticeships would be created by the building of HS2, while in a statement, High Speed Rail Industry Leaders said that figure would be 9,000.
“Our plan is for 2,000 full-time apprenticeships,” said Cowan. “Of course, that doesn’t necessarily mean 2,000 people - you could have many more if you make the apprenticeships part-time. The exact mix will be down to the contractors.…
