Lying on a table in the Read Street Tattoo Parlour in Baltimore, my best friend asked the tattoo artist—who was ready to ink her inner left arm—to describe the weirdest tattoo he’d ever given. The question derailed his focus, and he proceeded to explain his personal philosophy about tattoos, saying he believes people shouldn’t take them so seriously. “After all,” he said, “we are adults who have other adults draw pictures on our skin. It doesn’t get any goofier than that.” Although I believe tattoos are beautiful expressions of culture, values, and experiences, I couldn’t agree more with the point he was making.
