BRITAIN’S biggest build is the West Midlands’ “biggest opportunity”, said HS2 as it set out the £10 billion economic benefits that the new railway will deliver over the next ten years.
“The projected impacts of HS2’s arrival in the West Midlands are startling and represent a once-in-a-generation opportunity,” it added, pointing out that since HS2 started in 2017, the region has recorded increases of 66% in planning applications, 200% in planned floorspace, 240% in value of planned construction, and 484% in new homes planned.
These figures, which only cover the ‘HS2 impact zones’, translate into 41,000 additional homes, 704,000 square metres of new floorspace, and 30,835 new jobs.
More than 3,000 planning applications were examined. The analysis excludes planning applications relating to HS2 itself.
