How did you first get into quilting? My first quilt was a queen size quilt that I made in college as a Christmas present for a boyfriend. Looking back, I did so many things wrong, I’m sure it’s no longer usable. I started quilting again when my friends began having babies. The first quilt I made that I think really defines my current style was for a friend who paints sunsets. I wanted to make her a quilt that felt like ‘her’, so the sunset design came into being. HOW TO APPLIQUÉ CLAMSHELLS In this tutorial Kate shows you in detail how to appliqué clamshells with ease. Her handy technique uses clamshell templates, a clever ironing method to shape the clamshells, and a quick appliqué finish to quilt all of your clamshell pieces in place PREPARING THE CLAMSHELLS 1 Kate has used the template provided on p82 to make her clamshells. ■ The two pieces you will be working with are convex (Template A) and concave (Template B).
